A sustainability assessment of organic and conventional beef cattle farms in agroforestry systems: the case of the dehesa rangelands Organic Eprints
Escribano, A.J.; Gaspar, P.; Mesias, F.J.; Pulido, A.F.; Escribano, M..
Pasture-based livestock systems are a key element for the maintenance of the dehesa ecosystem. However, adaptative changes (mainly intensification) are reducing their sustainability. As a consequence, sustainable livestock systems must be found and implemented. Due to this, this work assesses the sustainability of 63 beef cattle farms (including organic and conventional ones) with two aims: (i) to identify the most sustainable systems and; (ii) to establish management measures in order to increase farms sustainability. For this purpose, a methodological adaptation of the MESMIS Framework was applied. A cluster analysis allowed us to identify three farms typologies. Typology 1 (organic farms) had the highest scores for the sustainability index (66.75%) and...

Beef Cattle Farms’ Conversion to the Organic System. Recommendations for Success in the Face of Future Changes in a Global Context Organic Eprints
Escribano, A.J..
Abstract: Dehesa is a remarkable agroforestry system, which needs the implementation of sustainable production systems in order to reduce its deterioration. Moreover, its livestock farms need to adapt to a new global market context. As a response, the organic livestock sector has expanded not only globally but also in the region in search for increased overall sustainability. However, conversions to the organic system have been commonly carried out without analyzing farms’ feasibility to do so. This analysis is necessary before implementing any new production system in order to reduce both the diversity of externalities that the variety of contexts leads to and the vulnerability of the Dehesa ecosystem to small management changes. Within this context and...

Cattle production in agroforestry systems. An analysis on the role of intensification and dependence of subsidies Organic Eprints
Escribano, A.J.; Gaspar, P.; Mesias, F.J.; Rosas, J.P.; Escribano, M..
Extensive livestock production systems have faced socio-economic factors (such as the loss of profitability and competitiveness) that have led to modifications in their management and structure. The main changes have been the abandonment of grazing, the increase in the use of external feed, the abandonment of farms, and the intensification of the systems. The dehesa is the consequence of human intervention in the natural Mediterranean forest. Due to this, the conservation of this ecosystem depends on the use of appropriate agricultural practices (Gaspar et al., 2007). Thus small changes in the production systems may have a great impact on its conservation and on the rural population. As consequence, the intensification of farms and the high prices of...

Challenges and future perspectives of different organic beef cattle farms of Southern Europe Organic Eprints
Escribano, A.J.; Gaspar, P.; Mesias, F.J.; Escribano, M.; Pulido, A.F..
The livestock sector must be redesigned in order to achieve food security sustainably. Several authors have argued that organic farming may contribute positively in this sense. However, the externalities of the organic livestock systems are influenced by several factors. Due to this, the aim of this paper is to shed light on the needs and perspective of the organic beef cattle farms located in the 'dehesa' ecosystem (SW Spain). For this purpose, we created the 'Feasibility of Success Index' (FSI) by using indicators that took into account the context of the extensive livestock systems located in the Mediterranean basin. Two groups of organic farms were analyzed: farms that sold calves at weaning age a conventional ones (Organic); farms that fattened and...

Competitiveness of extensive beef cattle farms located in the dehesa ecosystem (SW Europe). Organic Eprints
Escribano, A.J.; Gaspar, P.; Mesias, F.J.; Escribano, M.; Pulido, A.F..
Beef pasture-based systems of Europe, especially those located in disfavored areas, play a key role in the maintenance of the ecosystems and rural population. However, they suffer from low competitiveness. In this sense, the design of improvement measures is needed. Due to this, this work has two objectives: (1) to assess the competitiveness of the beef pasture-based systems of the Spanish rangelands ('dehesas'); (2) to design improvement measures. For this purpose, a Competitiveness Index (CI) was created on the basis of technical and economic indicators. According to this index, farms were classified in three groups (1 = highly competitive but very dependent on subsidies; 2 = medium level of competitiveness; 3 = low competitiveness but low dependence on...

Conversión de sistemas de producción caprinos de áreas desfavorecidas a ganadería ecológica Organic Eprints
Escribano, A.J.; Gaspar, P.; Escribano, M.; Mesias, F.J.; Pulido, F..
INTRODUCTION: The Spanish goat sector's crisis has led to the abandonment of a large number of farms. At present, sector's expectations are reduced, which threatens farms' permanence. This in turn means a loss of agricultural biodiversity, reduced economic activity and loss of rural population. In this context, it is necessary to implement strategies to ensure farms' continuity . In this sense, the conversion to the organic model is proposed in the farms analyzed. METHODOLOGY: To study the possibility and feasibility of such conversion an analysis of their structure (technical and economic characteristics), an assessment of farms' sustainability (based on social, economic and environmental parameters) has been carried out. For this purpose, the MESMIS...

Do organic livestock farms differ from low-input conventional ones? Insights based on beef cattle in southern Europe Organic Eprints
Escribano, A.J..
The objective of this study is to determine whether there are clear differences between conventional (but low-input) and organic beef cattle farms located in the Southwest of Spain. 33 conventional and 30 organic farms were compared in terms of structure, technical management, and performance. The results showed that organic farms (‘All Organic’) mainly focus on the production of calves at weaning age which are fattened in conventional holdings (‘Organic 1’; n= 22). The remaining organic farms (‘Organic 2’; n=11) showed to participate in almost all stages of the agri-value chain. ‘Conventional’ farms were mainly dedicated to producing calves at weaning age (similarly to Organic 1). Organic 1 had the smallest herd size: 80.18 LU, p<0.05). Organic 2...

Evaluación de la sostenibilidad de explotaciones caprinas extremeñas en áreas desfavorecidas como herramienta de apoyo en la conversión hacia explotaciones ecológicas. Organic Eprints
Escribano, A.J.; Gaspar, P.; Mesias, F.J.; Escribano, M.; Pulido, F..
INTRODUCTION: The Ibores-Villuercas region (located in SW Spain) is known for its dairy goat farms producing cheeses of high quality (P.D.O. Queso Ibores). The present study characterizes such farms and assess their sustainability, as a tool to determine which farms present more feasibility to carry out a conversion to the organic system. This conversion could be used as a marketing tool for these farms, and contribute to local development (both economically and socially), ensuring the maintenance of the farms and rural population while enabling the preservation of valuable landscapes. METHODOLOGY: farms where classified using cluster analysis. Later, a sustainability assessment of the clusters (groups of farms) was carried out. Finally, farms'...

Integrated crop–livestock systems with agroforestry to improve organic animal farming Organic Eprints
Escribano, A.J.; Ryschawy, J; Whistance, L.K..
The livestock sector has to satisfy the growing demand for animal products while reducing its environmental impact, in face of great climatic and market changes. For this reason, there is a necessity to redesign livestock production systems in order to make them more sustainable and adaptable. IFS (crop-livestock-trees) could be a viable option to achieve the above-mentioned global goals. Moreover, the implementation of conservation agriculture practices proved to improve crop-livestock beneficial effects. This review paper aims at highlighting the scientific knowledge existing regarding the advantages and limitations of crop-livestock systems including agroforestry and conservation agriculture practices. This shows that integration (this integration can...

Organic Livestock Farming: Challenges, Perspectives, And Strategies To Increase Its Contribution To The Agrifood System’s Sustainability – A Review Organic Eprints
Escribano, A.J..
The livestock sector is of great importance for the sustainability of rural economies and many ecosystems; however, it also has a high environmental impact. Due to the growing demand for animal products, there is a need to design new livestock production systems that allow the combination of food security and sustainability. Within this context, organic livestock may be a useful strategy to achieve such a pivotal goal. However, there is a lack of studies that integrate the existing knowledge, specifically in organic livestock, and integrating the main aspects implied in its practice (its externalities and challenges). The present work aims to fill this knowledge gap, providing strategies and insights that will help stakeholders and policy makers to improve...

Sostenibilidad ambiental de explotaciones ganaderas ecológicas y convencionales en agro-ecosistemas mediterráneos de alto valor ecológico: un estudio comparado basado en indicadores agroambientales. Environmental sustainability of organic and conventional livestock farms in a Mediterranean ecosystem of high ecological value: a comparative study based on agri-environmental indicators Organic Eprints
Escribano, A.J.; Gaspar, P.; Mesias, F.J.; Escribano, M.; Pulido, A.F..
This paper analyzes the beef cattle sector located in the dehesa agro-ecosystem (SW Spain). The objective is to detect the more sustainable systems based on the environmental dimension of sustainability comparing three production models. RESULTS: organic farms contribute to environmental stability to a greater extent than conventional ones due to the implementation of certain farming practices. Organic farms (mainly the 'Organic 2' group of farms) do not use pesticides nor chemical fertilizers and present greater integration of livestock species, crops and trees, which has positive environmental and economic effects. This integration allows better use of food resources and conservation of the heterogeneity of landscapes, conserving natural resources and...

Sustainability of organic and conventional beef cattle farms in SW Spanish rangelands (‘dehesas’): a comparative study Organic Eprints
Escribano, A.J.; Mesias, F.J.; Gaspar, P.; Escribano, M.; Pulido, F..
Organic production in Spain has increased substantially in recent years due to several factors, such as the growing interest of the European Union towards preserving sensitive ecosystems; the potential role of organic production in the socio-economic development of rural areas and the growing consumers' demand for safer and higher quality foods. Within this framework, this paper analyzes the beef sector of SW Spanish rangelands (dehesas). These are traditional systems characteristic of the Iberian Peninsula where native herbaceous vegetation and evergreen species of Quercus provide the basis for extensive beef farms. Alt-hough traditional management in dehesa farms is of vital importance for the sustainability of this particular ecosystem, in the last...

The role of subsidies in beef cattle farms in SW Spain: a comparison of organic and extensive farms Organic Eprints
Escribano, A.J.; Gaspar, P.; Pulido, A.F.; Mesias, F.J.; Escribano, M.; Pulido, F.; Rodriguez De Ledesma, A.
Livestock farming systems of the Spanish rangelands (dehesas) are traditional systems characteristic of the Iberian Peninsula where native herbaceous vegetation and evergreen species of Quercus provide the foundation for extensive beef farming enterprises. Dehesas are considered to be the most extensive, diverse, and low-intensity land use systems in Europe. Nevertheless, in the last twenty years, the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) has produced some important effects in these systems, specially an increase of the stocking rate. Although CAP policies contributed to stabilizing income in dehesa farms, they also produced loss of sustainability. Nevertheless, EU subsidies have become a key element in these enterprises, accounting for as much as 30% of the...

The role of the level of intensification, productive orientation and self-reliance in extensive beef cattle farms Organic Eprints
Escribano, A.J.; Gaspar, P.; Mesias, F.J.; Escribano, M..
Highlights •The identification of the livestock production systems (LPS) existing in a given area constitutes the first step to manage farms sustainably. •Management and structure of dehesa beef cattle farms positioned them in a good place regarding PAC's trends (mainly in terms of environmental protection). •Farms should reduce their dependence on external workforce and subsidies, and increase their productivity and economic performance. •The latter could be achieved adding value to the products sold, i.e. finishing more calves, developing new products and/or participating in marketing. •It has not been observed a high relationship between farms the typologies obtained from the analysis of technical-economic aspects, and the previously established...
